What is a Free Appropriate
Public Education, or FAPE?

Parents have important rights in the special education process including the right to be part of all educational decisions for a child eligible (or who may be eligible) for an IEP (Individualized  Education Program). One way to participate effectively in the special education process is to learn some of the "special language" of special education.

One important term you need to know is FAPE.  FAPE stands for Free Appropriate Public Education. When schools use this term, they are referring to a specific legal definition. Understanding what the initials that make up "FAPE" mean can help you understand your rights, advocate better for what your child needs and participate  in the IEP process.
