Friday officially marks the start of fall, the autumnal equinox when day and night are each about 12 hours. In the Bay Area, the change of the season may not be as pronounced as in other parts of the country, but it is no less gorgeous (in its own subtle way)Here are some of our picks of weekend events to welcome fall. What's Goin' On!

Walnut Festival. Sept. 22-25. The city of Walnut Creek presents its annual festival featuring family entertainment and fun.

Eat Real Fest. Sept. 23-25. Enjoy three days of food and family fun featuring hands-on activities, food skill demonstrations, butchery contests and live music. FREE, but charges for food and drinks.

Martinez Italian Street Painting Festival. Sept. 24-25. Main Street Plaza comes alive with beautiful chalk art, arts and crafts vendors, music and food, plus a farmers' market. Amateur and professional artists will create their chalk art in the plaza area between Starbucks and Bank of America. FREE.

Pleasant Hill Community Service Day. Sept. 24. Bring your family to volunteer in a variety of projects being held throughout Pleasant Hill. Enjoy a FREE pancake breakfast by the Lions Club, receive a FREE event T-Shirt and then disperse to work on more than 20 community cleanup projects around the city.

Smithsonian Free Day. Sept. 24. Enjoy FREE admission to the Blackhawk Museum in Danville and other Bay Area museums courtesy of the Smithsonian. Visit the website for a list of participating museums.

Open House at Cal Performances. Sept. 25. Enjoy a full day of music, dance and theater throughout the UC Berkeley campus with more than 20 performances to choose from in theaters, concert halls and out of doors. FREE.
