Epilepsy Foundation, Northern California - 2012 Year in Summary

Our mission is to support the 140,000 Northern California patients and their families, and 'outreach' best summarizes our past year. Key programs and services have educated and assisted families throughout our territory. We now have 13 support groups available to individuals with epilepsy who are either in search of advice and support from others facing similar challenges, or who are simply family members of someone with epilepsy looking for guidance. All support groups are facilitated by those who have experience with seizure disorders. School trainings have also increased and are conducted as live sessions to inform teachers and school nurses about epilepsy and seizure first aid. We are hoping to incorporate webinars into the school trainings in the near future, allowing us to conduct live trainings over the internet. In addition, SB161 was signed into law last year by Governor Brown which authorizes school districts to provide school employees with medical training to administer emergency medical assistance to pupils with epilepsy suffering from prolonged seizures. Finally, the Young Adult Leadership Council received its first official funding and will be used with the intent to raise awareness of epilepsy among young adults.

NEW DEVELOPMENTS: We are excited to announce the awardees for this year's gala!
Dr. Karen Parko of the San Francisco VA Medical Center will be receiving our Commitment to Progress Award for her important work with epilepsy patients in the Veteran and Native American communities.
Jessica Francis, a parent of a child with epilepsy, will be receiving our Volunteer of the Year Award for her inspirational community organizing, outreach and fundraising during the 2011 Freedom Walk.
We are also pleased to present Dr. Robert Fisher of the Stanford University School of Medicine as a special guest. Dr. Fisher, recognized nationally as a leading epileptologist, will give a talk on new developments in epilepsy therapy, including AEDs, devices and treatments.
This year's gala will be held at the beautiful, historic Julia Morgan Ballroom, and will feature elegant dining, lively entertainment and one of a kind auction items, such as these newly added packages:

Epilepsy Foundation of Northern California - 2011 Candlelight Care & Cure Gala Dinner
It's that time of the year again! Epilepsy Foundation of Northern California is pleased to invite you to attend our 2011 Candlelight Care & Cure Gala Dinner on Friday, November 18.
This year's gala will be held at the beautiful and historic Julia Morgan Ballroom, and will feature elegant dining, lively entertainment and never-before-seen auction items!
All proceeds from the gala will benefit support, research, education and services for the more than 140,000 Northern Californians who live with epilepsy every day. This year, we'll be highlighting the San Francisco VA Epilepsy Center and the brave veterans who now battle epilepsy as a result of service to our country, honoring the inspirational Team Jordan of this year's Freedom Walk and celebrating the kids of Camp Coelho!

Smart-Monitor is enrolling limited number of participants for in-home beta tests of the SmartWatch product.
The SmartMonitor team is excited to announce the launch of the first beta test program for their first of a kind “Peace of Mind” device – The SmartWatch.
SmartMonitor, based in San Jose, CA has developed a movement detection and alerting device that is worn on a person’s wrist and sends out alerts to caregivers, when it detects movement patterns in the limbs which may be similar to those caused by a tonic-clonic or grand-mal seizure. The alerts are sent to specified caregiver(s) cell phone within a few seconds. The alert indicates that a seizure is on the way and the caregiver can take the appropriate safety measures. SmartWatch is a battery-powered wrist-watch like device, which is passive, non-invasive and is easy to use.
Currently, the SmartWatch system is undergoing its second phase of clinical studies with neurologists at two well-known hospitals in the Bay area. Smart Monitor has received development grants from both the Epilepsy Foundation and the Epilepsy Therapy Project; it is receiving attention at medical conferences and in industry publications.
Smart-Monitor is enrolling limited number of participants for in-home beta tests of the SmartWatch product. The company is seeking people of all ages and genders prone to tonic-clonic (grand mal) seizures. The SmartWatch and a prepaid smart phone will be provided to testers at no cost, for 8-12 weeks, in exchange for product feedback. Testers will also be given the option for a discount on the final product when it is launched but are NOT required to purchase. Both children and adults can qualify, and medications and surgeries do not impact qualification. Participant confidentiality will be a top priority.
The SmartMonitor team will be qualifying participants based on information provided on an online application form, followed by a phone interview. For application forms and more information regarding the Beta tests HERE. Due to the availability of only a limited number of devices, we will be qualifying participants for the test on a first-come-first-served basis. New Epilepsy Youth Council
The Epilepsy Foundation of Northern California is forming a new Youth Council. They are looking for people between 18-24 who are interested in promoting epilepsy awareness. Epilepsy is not a requirement for application. More information on the council and how to apply can be found HERE.
