October is Disability Awareness Month and Disability Employment Awareness Month

It's Disability Awareness Month, Learning Disability Awareness Month and Disability Employment Awareness Month, let's all celebrate!

In the United States, 1 in 5 people has a learning disability - like dyslexia and ADHD.  This October during Learning Disability Awareness Month, we're celebrating our history and the progress we've made.  We plan to continue spreading awareness, educating, and providing useful resources and tools to help families at every stage of their journey.  Check out understood.org to get access to their resources and to subscribe to their newsletter.

Understood.org sent me their newsletter with the above image stating "Look How Far We've Come".  I do agree with that statement and the progress but I also believe that the journey is never ending.  Each child that is born, each new wave of generations brings an opportunity to go farther with change and to grow in new and exciting ways towards understanding, appreciation and advancement for ALL!

A Commemorative Year

This year marks not only the 75th observance of NDEAM, but also the 30th anniversary of the ADA. Both milestones are being commemorated with a range of events and activities centered on the theme "Increasing Access and Opportunity." An official poster is now available to download or order in both English and Spanish.

Check out this website, it has a lot of activities for in school and in home to discuss and be aware of ways to discuss and teach acceptance at home about disabilities, because as stated, it all beigns at home.  Check it out at: https://adayinourshoes.com/resources-to-teach-kids-about-disabilities-awareness-and-inclusion/

ADA30

The ADA is landmark civil rights legislation that works to increase access and opportunity for people with disabilities across society, including in the workplace. To learn more, visit ODEP's ADA webpage or its Job Accommodation Network (JAN), or learn more about advancements in disability employment since the ADA's passage in our ADA30 timeline.
