If your child is missing their classmates and friends you may want to consider hosting a virtual play date to keep them engaged with peers.
You can use different platforms like Zoom, Google Meet, Face Time; there are so many choices. The main thing is finding out which friend(s) your child wants to have a play date with and selecting a joint platform to use. Then you are ready to begin!
A few things to consider:
~ If you want to schedule it with more than one person at a time make sure they know each other and are friends.
~ Make sure not to select too many friends at one time, too many trying to talk and share can get confusing, lead to frustration or make your feel left out or shy.
~Make sure to set a reasonable time limit and monitor your child while online.
~Perhaps help out with ideas if your child and their friend are struggling with to interact, perhaps have them share a toy or do a building competition (more ideas below).
Fun Ideas for facilitating your child's virtual play dates:
~ Each child have a deck of cards and play "war" together, whoever has the highest card keeps their card and the other sets their card in a discard pile. They can end whenever they warm up to each other or continue until one person has all their cards in the discard pile.
~ Share a story about their favorite thing and their least favorite thing they have done during Shelter-In-Place.
~ Have Show and Tell time where they share a toy or share their house if they have never had a play date at their house before.
~ Have a dance party, each child takes turns selecting the song to play.
~Pick a challenge to build with Legos, paper, or recycled products or a coloring/drawing challenge and then have them talk while working and share out at the end of the timer.
