An opportunity to connect with our children
by Samania Young, Behaviorist
The coronavirus and rapid closure of schools has taken many families by surprise. Unexpectedly, our students are being asked to learn from home with online learning tools, packets, and assignments sent via email. What does this look like for my child who is currently in high school? How do I help them get engaged with learning online? For a lot of us, it's quite a challenge to convert our homes into a learning space while supporting a child's learning process.
Let's pause...and try to shift our thinking. This might actually be an opportunity to further know your child and gain a better understanding of their interests and academic skills. Maybe these set of circumstances make it possible for us to spend more precious time with our kids and family, that we otherwise might never get again. Yes, let's pivot towards a growth mindset. This will be the foundation of our relationship between our children and their engagement with learning online.
Here are some tips to create a space and mindset to engage our children for online learning at home.
Create a Learning Space
Does your child already have a special place to do homework? It's important to establish a quiet, minimalistic work space when your child is learning full-time from home.
For example, you can convert the kitchen table into a learning station. Turn off the TV and remove all kitchen or non essential items when your child is doing schoolwork. When it's time to eat, put away the school supplies and use it again as a kitchen table.
