AUTISM WORKSHOP SAN JOSE

DynaVox will be hosting a workshop at the MLK Library, on Wednesday, February 23, 2011, that your staff and members of your community may be interested in. I have attached a flier and have also included the information below.

An AAC specialist will teach a class that offers FREE CEU’s!! Please take advantage of this informative opportunity and feel free to list this event on your community calendar.

Our topic will be:

Supporting Language and Communication for Individuals with Autism

Have you ever asked…
• Should I use voice output augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) with
people with autism?
• As long as she can talk (like repeating lines from movies or imitating speech), she
doesn’t need AAC, right?
• Why would I give an expensive communication device to someone with problem
behaviors?
• Now that he has a communication device what can I do to help him use it effectively?
• Why should I put visual supports for behavior and learning on a communication
device?
If so, this session is for you! We will discuss a wide range of current research about the
effective use of AAC with individuals with Autism. Then, we will focus on the specific ways
AAC can be used to address social communication, expressive and receptive language,
and behavior and emotional regulation. We will discuss and demonstrate strategies and
techniques for both individuals with autism and their communication partners. Activities,
discussion, and case studies will be utilized to help participants personalize these
strategies and techniques. Planning tools will be introduced to help participants prepare
to use the new ideas immediately!
