Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream, and on Jan. 17, so did volunteers at El Monte Elementary School in Concord.
Under a gray, overcast sky, nearly 150 people of all ages and ethnic backgrounds worked together on beautification projects organized by Hands On Bay Area (HOBA).
"They're weeding the memorial garden, planting our native California garden, building tumbling compost barrels, rebuilding the terrace in front of the school, putting high-nectar plants in our butterfly garden, enclosing the chicken garden and painting the coop," said Principal Christina Bowman, stopping only when she ran out of breath.
