On May 5, 2010, members of the Legislative Sub-committee of CAC and MDUSD district administrators attended the Legislative Information Sharing Day at the State Capitol. The morning was filled with informative presentations including an inspiring speech by Assemblymember Joan Buchanan. After lunch, the team then branched out to the State Capitol and met with Assemblymembers: Tom Torlakson, Joan Buchanan, and Nancy Skinner’s staff member. Discussion items included state budget concerns, the importance of revenue generation, how crucial letter writing is for education advocacy, and current legislation affecting special education. After the meetings concluded, some members attended the Education Committee Meeting and watched a piece of the legislative process in action. Tom Torlakson shared time at the end of the day, with some of our committee members, discussing how crucial it is for everyday citizens to continue to remain involved in the process and make their voices heard. The Legislative Committee returned with enthusiasm to set goals for next year and expand relationships with neighboring special education groups that attended.
